“I want to make money from home”

A few days ago, I was talking to a friend of mine, Edd, who builds houses for a living. He has a decent business where he custom builds houses and performs major remodeling projects.

He said, “Since you’re in the Internet thing, tell me how you make money from it”.

I said “sure, but first can you tell me how to build a house”?

He said, “Right now”?

I said “yes, right now”.

He said “but there is so much you need to know before you can build a house. You need to know about soil conditions, permits, subcontractors, material costs, and a bunch of other things. I can’t tell you in a few minute how to build a house”.

I laughed a bit and said, “Believe it or not, there are basic things you need to know and challenges that exist when building a business online, and those can’t be explained in just a few minutes either”.

We talked about it for a while longer when it hit me like a ton of bricks.

Most of the people who come to the Internet to make money are just the average kind of person you would talk to at the hardware store or in a Walmart. How to make money from home

These are just regular folks who know nothing about marketing, or advertising, or copy writing, and such. They want to know how to make money from home and they think all you have to do is start an Internet business and the money will come rolling in.

Well, sadly, that’s where they’re wrong. This mistake can wind up costing them hundreds if not thousands of dollars because they are usually the same folks who want to believe that every marketer before them has the “magic bullet” and are willing to pay them for their ‘brand’ of marketing information.

So with that thought, and assuming that they have all the computer necessities ready to go, I have put together a list of 5 things I think a newbie would-be marketer should be looking for so their dream can come true.

1. Find a Mentor. You want to find one who is talked about a lot. You can find this out by doing searches on Google or by reading some comments in forums.

2. Follow the system your mentor has developed. Don’t re-invent the wheel and go out on your own by inserting some ideas of your own here. This will lead to off-road disaster and lost dreams.

3. Be a “Sticky”. Become a student who stays with their mentor and does not go chasing shinny objects. This is where a lot of time and money gets wasted. A lot of other marketers want your money and they will dangle the golden carrot in front of you to get it.

4. Stay focused. It takes time for some of the elements of the mentor’s system to start working, which makes it very easy to become impatient. Most folks who want to know how to make money from home don’t want to wait…they want it now, not later.

5. Be consistent. Sometimes marketing is a monotonous routine and it can get boring at times. But if you remain consistent and continue to follow the mentors instructions on a regular basis, you will see progress.

These are only five things that I was thinking. I’m sure as a reader, you can think of a few more. There are hundreds of e-books written on this subject but I invite you to leave your comment with your best advice for the new folks. Please keep it short.

Niche Websites-Making Money Online

July 31st, 2010 Mike 5 comments

Most marketers these days have a blog. For those who are familiar with WordPress or other blogging platforms, its ease of us and the setup makes it very simple to get a business website up in a few short minutes and somewhat longer if you’re not.

Blogging, at the beginning, was typically used to communicate with friends through personal blogs. But today that form of communicating has moved on to huge social sites such as Facebook and Twitter, and a hundred other social sites out there.

The blog began to evolve. Marketers began to use it to communicate to their customers or subscribers by adding short informational pieces called “posts”. The post contained important information that pertains to the topic of the product, service, or just personal stuff from the marketer.

Since then, while it is still used by some to communicate to customers, it has been used by many as a primary tool for making money online by establishing or expanding existing businesses. It’s great for advertising niche products and many are using a blog to build an empire by building many websites (blogs) within one business. In other words, the marketer created several websites that represent different products that would attract potential customers. This is all done through Building Niche Websitesbuilding blogs.

The potential for creating an endless stream of income is enormous. Once you master the technique of building the website and then implementing the content and traffic, it’s just a matter of time before you start to make a lot of money. Of course this is dependent on whether you’re advertising a product that people need and will buy.

One more thing that almost slipped by without mentioning it is the website itself. It’s important that the website be informative, functional, and appealing to the eye. Most people, who land on a website, are there but just a few seconds. In that time, they will decide if this is what they were looking for or not.

If it is not, or if the site loads slowly, or if the site is ugly or unimpressive, the visitor will leave. This all happens within just a few short seconds, so if you’re going to build one of these sites, be certain to put a lot of thought into your creation before you reveal it to the public.

Most folks who want to build a site and start that business building process have no clue how to do it. Many will try to do it by following steps given to them in some videos, but usually that takes a long time with a lot of setbacks and disappointments.

The best way to get started is to have someone build your first site for you. After that, just do the same thing your developer did and create the next one yourself. After you do a few of these, it will become much easier. So much so, that you might be able to do a few of them in a day.

If you want to get the first one built, which I think is a smart thing to do, head over to Niche My Website and get started right away. There you will get a lot of extras and they’ll even watch your site for 30 days to make sure all the technical stuff is working as it should.

If, however, you have knowledge to build one or several of these site and you just want to know how to make money by using them, click here and learn the strategies and techniques that have been hidden way too long.

Maps For Online Marketing Success

July 24th, 2010 Mike 18 comments

There is a saying; the definition of sanity is doing the same thing but expecting different results.

It’s a saying that’s been passed around the Internet marketing arena for quite a while now. Its simplicity provides me with the thought that if I keep doing the same ole’ non productive, non business building activities that I’m now doing, but somehow, by some Miracle, expect a better outcome than before, I have to be off my rocker.

I’ve read that many times and the first few times I did, I thought how clever and interesting that is.  But now when I read it, I wonder to myself if they have been watching me. I think they have secretly been spying on my activities because if they weren’t, how would they know that I haven’t been doing what I’m supposed to do.

Spies! There are spies everywhere! LoL!Work at home organize it

Sometimes I want to pat myself on the back for the things I accomplished on a given day. But there are far too many times when I didn’t get anything done…at least it seems that way. As I self analyze those days, I discover those were the days when I had a lot of stuff I wanted to do, but didn’t quite know where to begin.

I also found that it’s during those ‘heavy’ days that I began to get confused. I would try to determine what I should do next, what needs to be done now, what can wait till later, and on and on and on.

When I have a lot of ‘stuff’ that I know I need to get done, I waste a lot of time just trying to line it all up on a to-do list. By the time I got that all figured out, I loose concentration and I’m back where I started. I am so overwhelmed by all the things I need to do!!!

Whew! That was therapeutic. I’m much better now, thanks.

Well. After too many times of being enslaved by my non-producing activities, I finally developed and attitude of survival, meaning if I don’t get all this stuff in order, my marketing career will not survive.

So I have worked on organization. I have determined that all the things I want to do are activities that are necessary for my marketing and if I manage the tasks properly, I can get them completed on time.

I have gone back to the basics and developed my own mind map for 3 different areas.

  1. I have several sites that I maintain. Some of them are fairly easy to care for, only requiring a few minutes of monitoring now and then. Others are more complicated and require more of my time than the others. Since they wont take care of themselves, I have to find the time to do it.
  2. I also create other sites that are part of my online marketing. These are new fresh niche sites that require much more time and effort to get built. I have to do the research, build the site, get it indexed, and start the propagation of the traffic and all that other stuff.
  3. I maintain this blog and continue to do all the other necessary marketing required to survive; i.e. writing, research, marketing, and such.

These are the things I do but instead of trying to do all those things in a single day, I have to spread it out over a few days. So I have created my schedule of activity. For example, I do the research on one day and build the sites on another day. I maintain my other sites on an every-other-day schedule and do my own marketing analysis twice a week instead of every day.

A lot of the things I have prepared for my day were planned the day before. The last part of the day is reserved for providing a plan of attack for the next day. This gives me a jump on the day because I can be thinking about some of this stuff long before I start to work on it.

So that’s a thumbnail sketch of my planning.  Now I ask you…How do you manage your day?  Do me a favor and leave your comment. I would like to know.

Are We List Building or Name Collecting?

July 16th, 2010 Mike 8 comments

We won’t be long trying to make money on the Internet without hearing or reading about how everyone should have their own subscriber list. I believe the general reasons for making this statement is primarily to support this fact: that those who have a list are more likely to develop a sustainable online income vs. those who don’t have one…YOU NEED A LIST!

Now that that’s said and out of the way, the question is…are we list building or name collecting?

I suppose some would call it a silly question because the people on our list are names. But I think it goes much deeper here and if you follow along, it might just make some sense.

In one of my earlier posts, I said that we must build our list through relationships. You can read about that here. So if we need to build a list and we need to do this through building relationships, how is that accomplished.

First of all, let’s separate some things here

  • Name collecting is the act of collecting names through various marketing methods, i.e. splash pages, web forms, etc. Not scraping or anything like that.
  • List building, then, must be something else if we have already collected the names. That’s where the difference is. Our collecting is just that and will remain…a list of names if we don’t follow through with a good relationship toward the folks on the list.List Marketing

As it will always be, some people will never stay on a list nor will they buy anything no matter how “sweet” we are to them. But if we don’t develop a rapport with them through relationship building, they may all leave eventually.

We have this tendency to wrap both name collecting and list building into one event and pat ourselves on the back for our ingenuity and determination. But when we analyze it all, the only thing we have is a list of names.

The value of that list is determined by how they interpret us and our intentions for them. They will be able to tell whether that particular list is of value to them or if the information is good enough for them to hang around longer to hear more from us.

We’ve got to get past the idea that now that we have a list, all is fine in Dodge City. That’s just the beginning. And if we have begun to build our list, we need to make sure that these people are given the quality information they expect

Think about this for a second…every marketer and his/her monkey is trying to build a list and most have discovered that giving something away for FREE is the way to do it. So if the ungrateful marketers (and there are some) are using the same technique as us, how will we differ from them?

I’ll leave you to that question because you need to decide that for yourself, but as far as giving stuff away…Hey! It’s a great idea. I know of one guy who takes it to the extreme. If you want to know how to do this so you can build your own sustainable Internet business at the same time, click on this link right now.

How To Develop A Keyword Strategy For Using Keywords.

July 10th, 2010 Mike 6 comments

When I first started marketing on the Internet, I was not a marketer. I was just a regular fellow that thought he could make some money if he started selling stuff on the Internet. I was not acquainted with keyword strategy or for that matter, never really new the value of keywords.

Today, though, is a different story. I use keywords to target my traffic so I don’t have to pay a high cost in paid advertising. When these keywords are specifically relative to the product I’m selling, I have a great chance of getting visitors to my site. When they get there, the sales page does its magic and depending on the conversion ratio, I make some sales.

There are different strategies that many marketers employ when it comes to using keywords. Some will create a sales page and add several keywords in the meta tag section hoping one of them will be the one to attract the attention of a surfer.

Another strategy is using keywords that are more specific in nature and are so relative, meaning less general, to the product. This strategy results in truly targeted traffic because the person who types in this keyword is more educated about the product already and is probably at the point of buying something.Keyword strategy

When you think of it, using keywords to drive targeted traffic to your product is one of those fundamental rules every marketer should learn. As a matter of fact, even school children are able to know the true effectiveness of good keywords. Read this article to see what I mean.

One particular strategy of using keywords that I have been using is to write an article or blog post with a list of keywords that you have developed for that topic and/or for pointing a visitor to your sales page for that product.

I would use the main keyword for the product in the first and last section of the article or post and support that keyword with other keywords that are related to the product but is not the main keyword. These are called LSI keywords or better know as supporting keywords.

One example of that would be is this. Say you wrote an article on sunbathing. Along with the information you would use in the article such as places to sunbathe, how much time should you be in the sun at a time, what you should have with you when you sunbathe, your main idea in the article is to market a product.

The product might be a sunblocker.  If you were to do a search in Google for that product you see that there are thousands and thousands of other marketers using the same keyword to market it. If you use the same keywords these folks are using, where in the organic search results do you think your page would be…page 300 maybe?!

So the best thing to do in your keyword development stage is  to type sunbathing or sunblocker in the Google Adwords keyword Tool and look at the results. Try to find a keyword that is specific to your product but isn’t so popular that thousands of marketers are using it too.

This is sometimes called “low hanging fruit” because not many marketers will use that keyword. So this makes it less popular with the marketers, but because it’s in the keyword list you’re looking at right now indicates that people are looking for your product and have typed that particular keyword or keyword phrase in the search engine so they can find it.

Now that you have found your keyword, look for other keywords or keyword phrase that you can use as supporting keywords for your main keyword. These are usually keywords that are not as popular as the main keyword, but are still specific and maybe also descriptive of the product and your main keyword.

Now that you have a general idea about keyword strategy and using keywords productively, when you write your article or blog, be sure to follow my preferred rule above and you should see good results from that in either sales or subscribers.
